Lee, JanetJanet Harris Emery Lee , 101, died peacefully at Royal Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on January 1, 2014. She was the widow of A. Hamilton Emery III and of Donald E. Lee. She was born in Melrose, MA, the daughter of Edwin Andrews Harris and Dora Anderton Harris. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy and her brothers Edwin, William and Robert. She is survived by her sister Elaine Harris Woodward of Naples, Florida and her brother Paul Harris of Port St. Lucie, Florida.She was the loving mother of Joan Emery of East Sandwich, Susan E. Darcey of Gaithersburg, MD and Robert H. Emery of Danbury, CT. as well as grandmother to Christian Darcey, Caitlin Darcey, Jonathan Emery, Susan W. Darcey, Anne Darcey Sykes and Thomas Darcey, Jr. She was stepmother to Ann Lee Thompson of Southport, NC and Russell T. Lee of Anchorage, AK. She also leaves 8 great grandchildren.Janet spent her early years in Melrose, MA, Montpelier, VT and Norwich, CT. The family moved to Norwalk, CT when Janet was 15. She was graduated from Norwalk High School and Short's Secretarial College and went to work as a customer service representative for Southern New England Telephone Company. After several years with the Telephone Company she became the secretary to an attorney. In 1938 she married A. Hamilton Emery III (Ham). In 1940 they moved to Darien, CT and their first child, Joan, was born. Soon after their second daughter Susan was born the Pearl Harbor attack occurred. Ham quickly activated his commission in the USArmy reserves and went on active duty. He was shipped out to Africa in October of 1942 and returned home in October of 1945. During the war, Janet cultivated a Victory Garden and volunteered for the neighborhood watch. Following the war, their third child, Robert was born.Janet was an active volunteer for her children's activities in scouting and school, at the Darien Congregational Church and the American Red Cross, where she organized countless blood drives. She also became an avid golfer and enjoyed bridge and bowling. She joined the Darien Community Association and participated in many of their programs.In 1973, she and Ham moved to Stratford, CT before retiring to Stuart, FL in 1978.As her siblings retired they also joined her in Stuart and relished in the fact that they hadn't had so much time together since they had left home. They all enjoyed golf, bridge and church . Summers she and Ham travelled to the Cape to stay with their daughter Joan, visiting other family members and friends on the way up and back.Ham died in 1986. The following year Janet married Donald E. Lee, a widower and old family friend. They had 19 years together, full of travel, golf, bridge, church and family visits. They returned to the Cape every summer until 2003. They especially enjoyed some ocean cruises. As always she loved to dress up and go dancing.In 2006 Don Lee died. Janet then decided to move in with Joan in East Sandwich in 2007. She joined the VNA Adult Day Health Center and enjoyed it immensely. She continued this program until she moved into the nursing home in 2013. In 2008 Diane Cotter of Sandwich came as a caregiver to help Joan through the bone marrow transplant process and stayed on with the family to assist Janet. Janet quickly became very fond of Diane and loved their outings and appreciated Diane's care.Janet was moved into Royal Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in January of 2013. The care she received there was superior as well.A memorial service will be held later in the spring at Stuart Congregational Church in Stuart, FL.
