JANET COVELL JACKSON BURLINGTON - Janet Covell Jackson, 75 of Burlington died Nov. 17, 2009, in Birchwood Terrace Healthcare following several years of ill health due to Alzheimer's. She was born in West Stewartstown, N.H. on May 28, 1934, the daughter of Roger and Carolyn (Parker) Covell. Janet spent 13 years in Manchester, N.H. before moving to Burlington in 1965. Janet graduated from Colebrook Academy in Colebrook, N.H. in June 1952, and then married her high school sweetheart, Frederick Jackson, two months later. Janet was active in her church both in Manchester and Burlington developing many friendships. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Burlington serving on many committees. She was well known for organizing and cooking the Harvest Luncheon and Christmas Dinner. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years eventually getting involved at the state level. She was President of the Girl Scout Council of Vermont for six years then remained active, volunteering on committees. Girl Scouting was a very important part of her life and changing the lives of young girls through scouting. She worked at the Caswell Credit Union for many years as an Administrative Assistant and enjoyed meeting the educators in the community. In her later years, she volunteered at the Ethan Allen Homestead as a Tour Guide dressing in period custom. She loved telling stories from the "old days". Janet spent summers at her camp on Seymour Lake where she entertained family and friends with her cooking skills. She was a member of Lake Champlain Squares and loved square dancing. She would make her own dance costumes matching her husbands. She loved taking walks, traveling, reading, quilting, crafts and sewing. She always had a needle in her hands. Janet is survived by her husband, Fred, and leaves two daughters, Kathryn Remick, and her husband Bruce of Kennesaw, Ga., and Marilyn Mattick, and her husband Tom of Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, Laura Jordan, Andy, Jason and Heather Mattick; her sister, Doris Tirrill and her husband Lloyd of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister in law, Jane Sims of Manchester, N.H.; five nieces and nephews; and many long life friends who were like family. She will be missed and remembered for her generosity, giving ways and kind heart. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, PO Box 10832, Bedford, N.H. 031100832. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church on Buell Street in Burlington, Vt.
