-><!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Brown, JanetEndicott: A longtime resident of Endicott, New York, Janet Brown passed away peacefully on November 30, 2013 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City after several months of declining health. She was 93 years old. The oldest of two children, Janet was born at Children's Hospital in Buffalo on July 29, 1920 to C. Merrill Brown, a professor of Chemistry at the University of Buffalo, and his wife, Natalie Elder Brown. The family moved to Williamsville in 1925. Janet attended Williamsville public schools from kindergarten through high school. She was salutatorian of her high school class and won a full tuition scholarship to the University of Buffalo, as well as a New York State scholarship. She distinguished herself at U.B. where she majored in English, graduated with honors, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She moved on for an M.A. in English, and her thesis on the Victorian heroine Elsie Dinsmore was selected by the University for publication. After working at Lockwood Memorial Library at U.B. for two years, Janet obtained a degree in Library Science from McGill University in Montreal and moved on to the newly founded Harpur College, part of the fledgling State University of New York system. At the time of her retirement she had long held the position of Chief of Acquisitions at SUNY Binghamton. Janet never lost her interest in learning and after her retirement audited many classes at SUNY. She was a devotee of all kinds of puzzles, especially New York Times crossword puzzles, the cleverer and wittier the better. She had a marvelous sense of humor and the kindest of hearts. She denied herself but was unstintingly generous with others. She never gave in to infirmity. She was an admirable person and will be remembered most fondly by her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and David Miller of Berkeley, California and her nephew and nieces, Sam, Sally, Rebecca and Susie, as well as by many residents of Endicott. Private funeral arrangements are pending through the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, Binghamton.
