ORANGE CITY, Fla. - James E. White, 86, died Monday, March 26, 2012 in Orange City, Fla.Jim was born on Jan. 17, 1926, son of the late James and Elizabeth White (Leary), of Meriden, Conn. He was the husband of Marion (Hobson) to whom he had been married for 58 years. He had been a Professor of English Literature at Rhode Island College for 32 years. Jim grew up in Meriden. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served in Aleutian Islands as a radio operator. Following discharge, he received his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University (1951) in Middletown, master's degree from the University of Connecticut at Storrs (1952) and PhD from Boston University (1964).He is survived by his wife Marion Hobson White; their five children, Ellen Rook (David,) of Delmar, N.Y., Kevin White, of Providence, R.I., Julie Pierson (Rick,) of Longwood, Fla., Thomas White (Concetta,) of North Smithfifeld, R.I. and Steven White (Sandra-Lynn,) of Cumberland, R.I.; and eleven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Cuneen.Funeral service will take place 11a.m. Saturday, April 28 at the St. John Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., Slatersville, R. I. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his memory to the Rhode Island College Foundation Shinn Study Abroad Fund, 60 Mount Pleasant Ave., Providence, RI 02908
