GARVEY, JAMES E., A funeral service for James E. Garvey, 65, of Orlando, who passed away Thursday, June 24, 2004 will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 861 Maitland Avenue, Altamonte Springs, on Monday June 28th at 10AM. A viewing will be held at Union Park Memorial Chapel at 10033 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando, on Sunday June 27th from 2-6PM with a special prayer service at 4PM. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 2400 Harrell Road, Orlando. Mr. Garvey was born November 8th, 1938, in Schenectady, NY. His career, serving those suffering from alcohol and drug addictions, spanned almost 30 years. Jim began working as a Journeyman Sand Molder in Schenectady, NY General Electric Company plant. After 15 years in that position, Mr. Garvey established and managed one of the first joint Employee Assistance Programs for the General Electric Company/International Union of Electrical Workers in the United States of America. He completed his B.S. degree at State University of New York and later did additional postgraduate coursework. He held several professional certifications including Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP) and Certified Addictions Professional (CAP). Later in his career he worked in a national capacity with several addiction treatment multi-hospital systems that resulted in literally thousands of people getting into treatment for their addictions. In 1988 he established a multi-site outpatient addiction treatment center in Orlando that to this day serves hundreds of clients weekly. Jim was a sought after speaker for years especially at recovery support groups. As a young man he served four years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1961. He loved to fish whenever he had a chance and especially loved to fish in Alaska returning there several times. Jim is survived by his wife, Corinne V. Garvey of Orlando; his sister, Edie Phelps of Grandy, NC; sons, James Garvey of Myrtle Beach, SC, Michael Gallo of Severn, MD; daughters, Tammy McKinney of Vancouver, WS, and Cheri Fisher of Orlando; 11 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Corinne, which will be directed to Jim's favorite charity. Checks can be sent to Union Park Funeral Home, 10033 E.
