MARS HILL - Irene Smith, 87, wife of the late Stuart Smith, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011, at a Houlton hospital. She was born April 4, 1924, in Monticello, the daughter of Allan McLean and Sadie (Syphers) McLean Harvey. Irene loved knitting and was a gifted seamstress and was co-owner of a shop in Mars Hill. She was a longtime member of United Methodist Church of Mars Hill as well as the Methodist Women. In the years after the death of her husband, Stuart, she loved to talk about him and reminisce with others about his life. Irene is survived by six children, Linda Hartley and her husband, Richard, of Newburgh, Catherine Kingsbury and her husband, Dennis, of Blaine, Beverly Giles and her husband, Neil, of Fort Fairfield, Mark Smith of Mars Hill, Joyce Marie "Kimberly" Ellis and her husband, David, of Chelsea and Suzanne Hartt and her husband, Wayne, of Stillwater; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister, Newty (McLean) Chambers of Rockland; a half brother, Asa Harvey and his wife, Betty, of Monticello; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a half brother, Jason Harvey; and a half sister, Joyce Carrier. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, May 2, at United Methodist Church, Mars Hill, with Pastor Sue Brown officiating. Friends may call noon until the time of service at the church. Interment will take place after the service at Pierce Cemetery, Mars Hill. A reception will be held after the burial in the reception hall of the church.
