Funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at St. James Catholic Church for Irene S. Williams, 89, Gainesville, Ga., formerly of Gadsden, who died Tuesday July 15, 2008. Father Bean will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home will direct.Mrs. Williams was a native of Alabama, born Nov. 23, 1918, in Cherokee County. She lived most of her adult life in Gadsden. She attended St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Jacksonville, Fla., graduating as a registered nurse in February 1945. Her long career, spanning more than 50 years, included 19 years at Holy Name of Jesus Hospital and 20 years at Mountainview Hospital. After retiring in 1984, she returned to work at Riverview Regional Medical Center (formerly Holy Name of Jesus Hospital) until 1998. After a period of declining health, she died during the evening of Tuesday, July 15, 2008.She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard C. Williams; sister, Idene Gibson; and brother, Austin Steele.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Poland; grandson, Jonathan Poland; granddaughter, Kinsey Poland; sisters, Mary L. Shirk, Ruby King and Betty Prater; brothers, Bob Steele, Tom Steele, Loyce G. Steele and Sam Steele.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or to the American Lung Association at www.lungusa.org.The family wishes to thank the staffs at Morningside Assisted Living of Gainesville, Compassionate Hospice, United Hospice and Peachtree Christian Hospice for the loving care they provided for Mrs. Williams.The family will receive friends at St. James Catholic Church one hour prior to service.
