Smith, Irene MeleSept. 27, 1920 - Aug. 31, 2011Irene Mele Smith (nee Strobach) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the age of 90, after a long and happy life. She passed away at home, surrounded by her family and friends, and the many loving caregivers at Arden Courts who helped her enjoy the last year of her life. A Master Gardener and chemist, Irene was most proud of her children, Nancy Mele Anas, April Mele Leahy and Paul Francis Mele, MD. Throughout the last few weeks Irene and her family appreciated the touching stories about her gardens, her sense of humor, and her loving and caring ways, that were shared by her caregivers. In keeping with her wishes, Irene's children, their spouses, Peter P. Anas, MD., John W. Leahy, and Jitka Hradek, and her grandchildren will scatter her ashes in her favorite places at a later date. Irene's two husbands, Frank Mele, father of their children, and Peter H. Smith, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children; her granddaughters, Meredith Laurel Anas and Sarah C. Sos (nee Mele) and her husband Brandon Sos; her grandson Sean C. Mele; her cousin Irene Mracek; and so many friends who were touched by her generosity and her love of life. Plant lovers all over have benefited from her knowledge and advice and many will think of her whenever they see a garden, plant, or flower. Irene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.Donations to your favorite charity in Irene's name would make her smile.
