Irene L. Carter     SOUTH PORTLAND - Irene L. Carter, 78, of Latham Street, South Portland, died Monday at a Portland Hospital after a long illness.     Mrs. Carter was born in Portland, a daughter of Ralph D. and Helen M. Smith Latham. She was educated in the South Portland Schools and graduated from South Portland High School in the Class of 1945.     When Irene was younger she attended the Elm Street United Methodist Church.     For 20 years Irene worked for the James A. McBrady Roofing Company in the clerical department.     Her hobbies included gardening, baking, handwork, reading and music of all kinds. She was also an accomplished pianist.     Irene is survived by her husband of 55 years, Roger H. Carter; a daughter, Beth E.
