Irene Nunn Cooper, beloved wife of the Rev. Dr. Robert Sydney Cooper for 68 years, died Sunday, July 1, 2007. The daughter of the late Charles and Ethel Reynolds Nunn, she was born in Eatonton, Ga., and grew up in Gainesville, Ga. She attended the Baptist Bible Institute at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, the University of Georgia, and George Washington University. Mrs. Cooper served with her husband in churches in Georgia, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C. For many years, they served in Laurens, S.C. at the First Baptist Church and at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, where she participated in Ladies' First Thursday, the Good News Club, Young at Heart, the Prayer Ministry, and was a member of the Pastor's Sunday School Class. She and her husband were also volunteers for Mobile Meals.Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Jackie Autry and her husband, Col. Jerry Autry (US Army Ret.), of San Francisco, Calif., the Honorable Gordon G. Cooper and his wife Linda Cooper, and Ruthi Neely and her husband Bob Neely, all of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Dr. Meg Autry Jacobson and her husband Dr. Gavin Jacobson, Rachel Hunter and her husband Jeff, Christi Austin and her husband Tom, Danielle Stephens and her husband Will, Ashley Call and her husband Jeff, Robert Neely and his fiancee Lindsay Addison, Kam Neely and his wife Emily, Jenny Neely, Hudson Neely, Merianna Neely, and Chase Neely; great-grandchildren, Lupe Jacobson, Frances Jacobson, Lilly Hunter, Julia Austin, Caroline Austin, Savanna Stephens, and Foster Neely; a sister, Katie Bush of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Ronnie Nunn of Winder, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.Visitation will be 1 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the Church.
