IRENE ANNE MILLER, 71 LAKELAND - Irene Anne Miller, 71 died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 of cancer. Irene was born April 6, 1939 in Darlington, England, the elder child of Arthur and Irene Hardy. She survived the Blitz and even though a very small child during WWII, retained some memories of it. She attended the Royal College of Art and Hammersmith Business School in England. In the mid 70's she moved to New York and later to Lakeland. She studied manual/Autocadd drafting and piping design at Travis Technical Center, going on to work for the following local companies; Bartow Fabrication, Lemco Engineers, Agrico Chemical, Jacobs Engineering, Keith & Schnarrs, McVay Woods, BCI Engineers & Scientists, Florida Engineering & Design, and Winter Haven Public Works Dept. Irene retired from the Transportation Division, Polk County in 2010 as a Senior Engineering Aide. She earned a motorcycle license in England (and rode a moto-cross bike in West Texas) as well as obtaining a Student Pilots License in Lakeland in 1980. In addition to travel, sailing and spending time in her home with her husband and pets, she enjoyed participating in Toastmasters and earned some acclaim with her speech about having married not one, but two Engineers! She was preceded in death by her parents and her ex-husband and dear friend Malcolm Dixon. Irene is survived by her loving husband Ronald Miller and step-son Scott Miller of Lakeland, as well as her brother and sister-in -law Bruce and Anne Hardy, nephew Lance Hardy, niece Nicola Maynard and her husband Paul and their children Scott and Alice of England.
