Inez Stocker Johnson Inez Stocker Johnson, 92, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, in Tallahassee, Fla. A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 25th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee. Interment will be at a later date in San Marcos, Texas She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan E. Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Art Education, Florida State University.Survivors include three sons, Ivan E. Johnson III (Marsey) of Tallahassee, Buzzy Johnson (Betty) of St. Augustine, Fla., and Joe Johnson (Cindy) of Cairo, Ga.; two daughters, Susan Shelton of Humble, Texas. and Jeannie Bolinger (Bob) of La Jolla, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Ben Johnson (Carrie), Nate Johnson (Winona) and Margi Johnson, Jessie and Cody Johnson, Charlie and Willy Johnson, Matt Shelton (Amber and great-grandchild Aubree) and Kelly Shelton LaRose (Justin) and Maddie and Sophie Bolinger.Inez was born in 1915 in San Marcos, Texas, and moved to Tallahassee in 1952 when her husband joined the faculty at Florida State University. She received her bachelor's degree in biology in 1935 at Texas State University and a master's in business from the University of Texas. Life was fun with Inez. She loved people and people loved her as well.Her sense of humor and straight-forward attitude about how things should be were well-known. She had her own style: wonderful hats, crazy eyeglasses, and unusual and striking necklaces. She was a great cook and enjoyed good food. You knew you would be well fed when you were with Inez. She considered herself "something of a bird" and was known to many as "Birdie." She believed in helping others and volunteered throughout her life.She helped start Meals on Wheels in Tallahassee in 1973 and assisted with delivering meals up until a month before her death. She was involved with many organizations — Delta Gamma Sorority, the Oleander Garden Club, University Woman's Club, Retired Faculty and the "Monday Night Group." She played bridge weekly and shared her love of games with her children and grandchildren.She traveled to Europe many times with her husband, where they led tours for students and adults. Six summers were spent in Oxford, England, where Ivan was the assistant director for the FSU program. Inez was blessed with many close friends. She will be remembered for her gumption, her wit, her tenaciousness, her worry-free attitude and her love of her family.She always said, "I don't know where I'm going, but I'm sure my friends will be there." We will miss you, Birdie! Memorial contributions may be made to the Ivan and Inez Johnson Family Art Education Graduate Scholarship, FSU Foundation, 3100-A University Center, Tallahassee, FL 32306-2350.
