February 27, 2006 Helen Walrath Smith, 76, of Liverpool, formerly of Ithaca, died on February 27, 2006 of a head injury, the result of an accident in her home. A 37-year employee of the New York telephone system, she retired from Verizon Communications in 1994.After retirement, she and her husband of almost 50 years, Jesse F. Smith, Jr., traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Smith predeceased her in 2001. Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Deborah Smith, of Boulder, Colorado; a sister, Meroe Haman, of North Syracuse; a brother, Carl Walrath, of Oswego and Florida; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Lyland Walrath, predeceased her in 2005. Her spirited nature and quiet devotion to family will be deeply missed.
