ROTTERDAM Helen V. O'Donnell Smith of Theodore Road, Schenectady, N.Y., passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Glendale Nursing Facility due to complications from Alzheimer's disease on February 3, 2004 where she had been a resident for the past five months after breaking her hip in a fall. Helen Smith, daughter of the late Elizabeth A. Riley O'Donnell and Thomas O'Donnell, sister of the late Loretta A., John T., Elizabeth M., Joseph, Marguerite Peg M. and Thomas V. O'Donnell, was born in Albany, N.Y. on November 21, 1912. A resident of Schenectady since 1925, she was employed by the General Electric Company in the payroll department during the years of World War II. Married in 1942, she was a homemaker and mother. An avid bridge player, she was a member of a local club for more than 30 years. Helen Smith will be fondly remembered with love and affection by those who survive her; husband, Patrick E. Smith; her sons, former City of Schenectady Assistant Chief of Police Patrick T. Smith and Dennis J. Smith, all of Schenectady; cousins, Mrs. Catharine Hickey Alford of Lake City, Fla. and Mrs. Joann De Gloria Varno of Rensselaer, N.Y. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street and at 10:30 at St. John the Evangelist Church where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The funeral home will be open Saturday morning from 9:00 until 10:00 for those who wish to call. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206.
