SMITH Helen (Marjorie) passed away peacefully at home April 15, 2004. Helen's life began in 1922 in the small town of Howlan, Prince Edward Island. She was the eldest of 11 children born to Lester and Ethel Sherren. Although she would eventually leave the Island, her fondness for PEI would always be with her. Helen and sister Rita headed to Montreal during WW11 to work for Northern Electric Radio. It was there that Helen met up with a dashing young RCAF man named Ronald Smith. The couple later married and set out to Victoria to raise a family. After more than 50 happy years together, Ron died in 1998. Helen devotedly cared for him throughout his long illness. For 5 years after Ron's passing, Helen continued to donateher time and efforts to others in the Lodge at Broadmead. Helen is lovingly remembered by daughter Sharon (Doug), son Brian (Susan), granddaughter Wendy (Christopher), grandson Darin (Amy), granddaughter Brindley, grandson Barrett, and great-grandson Benjamin, sisters Rita, Francis (Wendell), Ethel, Laura (Eugene), Bonita (Ralph), Eleanor (deceased), brothers Alfred (Ruth), Foster (Myrna), Roland (deceased) and David (deceased), and by scores of cherished friends. Helen led a very active life, dividing her time between raising a family and working hard with the Hudson's Bay Company. She and Ron also found time to laugh and dance with their many friends at McMorran's and at the Pro Pats Legion. She will forever be remembered for Sunday family dinners, homemade buns, canned pears and her world-renowned tomatoes. Mom, we will always remember to lock the door, take off our shoes in the house and not to rock back in the chairs. The family wants to extend its sincere gratitude to Heidi and Adrienne from We Care for their warm and compassionate home support, to the remarkable staff of Victoria Hospice, and to Dr. Medhurst for his care through the years. Funeral Service will be held on April 23, 2004 in the Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC at 2:00 pm. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so wish donations in Helen's memory may be made to the Victoria Hospice Society, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, BC, V8R 1J8.
