Helen S. Garvey, 94, of West Orange, N.J., died Sept. 8, 2013. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at 10 a.m. from Holy Trinity Church, 315 Main St., West Orange, N.J., with burial at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Visit www.iowacremation.com to leave condolences. Helen was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Newark, N.J., to Martha Hoffman and Raymond Percy Smalling. She married Robert John Garvey on March 2, 1946. They were married for 60 years. Helen was a member of Holy Trinity Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary and had been a Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. Helen retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance. Her energy, love, and enjoyment of life will be missed. She is survived by Virginia "Ginny" Poppen (Gary) of Reinbeck, Iowa; Ruth Garvey Fleshman (James) of Houston, Texas, and Robert Garvey (Linda) of Hampton, N.J.; six grandchildren, David (Kami), Daniel (Lana) Poppen, and Laura Poppen Groeneweg (Jonathan), Ryan, Kevin, and Michael Garvey; five great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond Smalling Sr., and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Walter Sr. and Edward. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Church.
