Helen Maxine Carpenter, 81, Brownstown, passed away at 12:27 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Surprise Methodist Church and was a housewife. Born Nov. 23, 1926, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Evan and Ora Grider Fields, both of whom preceded her in death. In 1942 she married Gilbert Lee Carpenter, who preceded her in death in 1993. Survivors include three sons, Leon (Inez) Carpenter, Orlando, Fla., and Gilbert Ray (Sharon) Carpenter and Dennis M. (Deborah) Carpenter, both of Freetown; a daughter, Sharon Riggs, Martinsville; two brothers, Jack Fields, Paris Crossing, and Delbert Fields, Norman; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Downing, and two brothers, Frank Fields and Ervin Fields. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Acme Cemetery, Seymour. Memorials may be given to Hoosier Christian Village Auxiliary or Schneck Medical Center Hospice through Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc.
