HELEN LOUISE COURTRIGHT COX FORMERLY OF CALUMET CITY, IL Helen Louise Courtright Cox, age 81, passed away quietly at her Mint Hill, NC, home Tuesday morning, January 27, 2009. The family will receive friends, Saturday, January 31, 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service of celebration that will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church. Rev. T. Baldinger and Rev. B. Torgler will lead worship. A graveside service will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, Forest Lawn Drive on the Weddington side of Matthews. Helen was born in Calumet City, IL, October 11, 1927. She answered an altar call at the age of four years, and Helen faithfully served the Lord Jesus until her Heavenly Father called her home. She taught Sunday School and Bible School in her home churches for 30 years (Hammond Trinity, Hammond, IN, Griffith Lutheran, Griffith IN, Resurrection Lutheran, Charlotte, NC). In 1980 she became a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Charlotte, NC. At Messiah Helen turned her talents to opening her home for back yard bible schools and women's bible studies. She helped create Braille Bibles. Helen was a master seamstress and sewed with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, sending quilts to distant lands as well as local agencies. She used her talented needle-work skills to crochet/knit baby blankets for the premature babies at local hospitals. As commanded by Jesus, Helen joyfully served "the least of them," always sharing the Gospel of Jesus with all who would listen. Helen Louise Courtright married Ralph E. Cox on October 12, 1947. Ralph was Helen's high school sweetheart and they were married soon after he returned from service to our country in WWII. Helen was a loving wife and soul mate. Her profession of choice was Homemaker and Mother. Creating and maintaining a nurturing home for her husband and children was her focus. Helen had exceptional gifts of hospitality and entertaining. All who crossed the threshold were welcome in her home and were treated with honor and respect due angels in disguise. In addition to Ralph Cox, her loving husband of 61 years, Helen is survived by her three children: daughter, Janet (Bob) Smith of Wesley Chapel, NC, son, Mark (Margaret) Cox of Nebo, NC and son, Scott (Sarah) Cox of Chapel Hill, NC; six grandchildren: Rachelle Smith McClintock of Charlotte, NC, Robert A. Smith of San Antonio, TX, Scott M. Smith of Everett, WA, Rebekah Smith Biggerstaff of Winston-Salem, NC, Misty K. Cox of Nebo, NC and Connor B. Cox of Chapel Hill, and; five great grandchildren: Robert and Nicole Smith, Anna Scott and Will McClintock and Emerie Hope Smith; younger sister, Minnie Courtright Hayes, of Vaca Ville, CA. She was preceded to heaven by older brothers: Lamar Courtright and Loren Courtright; and older sister Eileen Courtright Tebo. Helen was lovingly called "Sweetieface #2" by her sisters, (Eileen " "Sweetieface #1" and Minnie "Sweetieface #3"), or she was called "Stooge" by friends because she looked like her brother Loren, also known as "Stooge." She was "Aunt Helen" to some thirty-five nieces and nephews, and after moving to Charlotte, NC in '70 she became known as "Grandma Helen." To continue celebrating Helen's devout practice of daily Bible reading, the family suggests donations be made to the Gideons International, whose mission is to send bibles across the world. The Gideons International, Box 140800, Nashvillle, TN 37214-0800 or www.gideons.org (click on Gideon Expression Cards). A special thank you is sent to those who so lovingly cared for Helen during the "winter season" of her life: employees of Asbury Care Center at Aldersgate, Hospice Palliative Care of Charlotte, Bayada Nurses Home Care Specialists, Dr. Peter Copsis, Dr. W. Stuart Tucker, Jr., and Darlene Mullis. Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel, NC is assisting the family. Online condolences may be left at www.heritagefuneral.net.
