HELEN L. SMITH OVID - Helen L. Smith, age 91, died Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Beechtree Adult Care Facility in Ithaca, New York, after an extended illness. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, at the Covert Funeral Home, Ovid. In lieu of flowers, Helen requested that any donations be made to South Seneca Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 280, Ovid, NY 14521, or another charity of one's choice. Helen was born on December 22, 1917, in Pinconning, Michigan. Helen married her (late) husband, Paul Smith, also from Michigan, in 1942. They moved to New York in the late 1940's, finally settling in Interlaken in 1951. At that time they built, opened, and operated Happy Landing Restaurant, the premier local dining and gathering place for many years. After retiring from the restaurant business and selling Happy Landing in 1977, Helen moved to Florida, where she lived and worked until 2003. Her last employment was as a volunteer at Leesburg Regional Medical Center for a number of years, where she received much praise and an Outstanding Excellence Award for her loyal service there. In 2003, Helen moved to Verona Village, Ovid, for retirement. Helen, a savvy businesswoman at heart, was always very active and independent. She enjoyed traveling, driving, walks in the sunshine, walks and visiting with friends at Verona Village, spending time with her family and other friends, shopping for bargains, crosswords puzzles, and diversified reading. Helen is survived by her son, Allan, and his wife, Sande (Bond) Smith, of Interlaken; three grandchildren, Ashleigh (Smith) Landon of Lodi, Miles Smith of Ovid, and Amity Smith of Lodi; brother, John (Dorothy) Filipeck of Ovid; brother, Joseph (Laura) Filipeck, Pinconning, Michigan; several brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and longtime friend, Maryellen Bond, of Ovid.
