->HALLOWELL -- Helen L. Loring, 90, of Balsam Drive, died peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at her home.She was born in Augusta on Dec. 6, 1918, the only child to Alonzo and Flora (Moulton) Hill.Helen graduated from Cony High School, class of 1936 and attended Gates Business College. She had worked as a teller for the First National Granite Bank in Augusta and later worked for many years in the office at the Augusta Print Shop. She was a 50-year member of the White Rose Chapter 174 Order Eastern Star in Sidney and was past district Deputy Grand Matron; member of the Mary Kelton-Dummer Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in Hallowell; member of the Augusta Bowling Association, Women's International Bowling Congress and the Kennebec Valley Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She was a former member of the Western View Golf Course and did volunteer work for the Women's Maine State Golf Association. She also volunteered her time with Hospice of Kennebec Valley.Helen enjoyed genealogy and playing bridge with her friends at Granite Hill. In her earlier years she like to hunt and fish. She was a fierce competitor in whatever activity she pursued.The family would like to thank the staff at Martha Ballard Assisted Living at Granite Hill Estates and HealthReach Hospice and Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, especially Deb Heald.She was predeceased by her husband John Loring Sr. in 1999.She is survived by two sons, John P. Loring Jr. and his wife, Victoria, of Rye, N.H., and Marshall Loring and his wife, MJ Tierney, of Shirley, Mass.; three daughters, Elizabeth Brennan Burgess and her husband, William, of Augusta, Louise O'Connell and her husband, Walter, of Reading, Mass., and Sylvia Katz and her husband, Mark, of Hallowell; grandchildren Kathleen Brennan, Daniel Brennan, Scott O'Connell, Sarah Loring, Andrew Loring, Emily Williams, Wendy Burgess Tardiff, Jessica Trammell, Sarah Katz and Benjamin Katz; a great-grandson Devin Tardiff; a niece, nephew and cousins.There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of Helen's life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Augusta. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the HealthReach Hospice & Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903-0828.Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Condolences to the family may be sent to www.khrfuneralhomes.com.
