OAKLAND -- Helen L. Hooper, 81, died following a brief illness, Monday, July 18, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.Born in Thomaston, May 30, 1930, she was the daughter of Newell and Josephine Mitchell McLain. Educated locally, she was a 1948 graduate of Thomaston High School. Following high school, Helen was employed as a seamstress with Pearson's Coat Factory and then with Thomaston First National Bank. In 1955, Helen married Robert Hooper. Together they made their home in Rockland, then later moved to Oakland. Helen continued working until the birth of her children, at which point she became a stay-at-home mother. She was proud of her family's boat building heritage and continued working with wood as she and her husband built their own home. She was an avid crafter, making many beautiful braided rugs and intricate quilts. She also enjoyed sewing and was an accomplished seamstress. She is predeceased by three brothers, John, Alpheus and George McLain; and a sister, Mary Massie. Helen is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert Hooper, of Oakland; her daughter, Lucretia Hooper, of Belgrade; her son, Joel Hooper, his wife Marti, and two grandchildren, Megan and Isaac, all of Mercer. Also survived by her brother, Newell McLain, and his wife, Arlene, of Rockland; brother-in-law George Massie of Warren; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to visit from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
