ELIOT, Maine — Helen Goodwin, 82, of Pleasant Street in Eliot, died on Feb. 12, 2011, at her home surrounded by her family. A true Eliot native, she was born on Feb. 4, 1929, as daughter of Forrest and Laura (Young) Leach, in her family home on State Road, where she was raised and would later raise her own family. She attended local schools, graduating from Eliot High School with the Class of 1947. On Sept. 5, 1949, she married her loving husband of 62 years, Edward "Bud" Goodwin. Together they raised three sons in their home in Eliot. While the boys were growing, Helen was active in Scouting as a Den Mother and worked for the telephone company, also for the School Department in the cafeteria. Later in life she worked for Fanny Farmer and was the manager of the visitors center at the Albacore Park. Helen was an active lifetime member of the Eliot United Methodist Church, enjoying Faith Circle and her time as a Sunday school teacher. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star Sara Orne Jewitt Chapter, the Ladies Amicus Club at the First Christian Church, the Eliot Lions Club as a Lioness and enjoyed attending the Eliot Sr. Citizens program. Helen and Bud always enjoyed a trip, especially trips to Nova Scotia and beyond with lifetime friends, Allen and Ann Hale. She loved handy work, making Afghans to share with family, embroidery, she was a talented card maker, often sending them to family and friends even if she had to make a new holiday to make and send one. Helen's first love was unquestionably her family; she is survived by her husband, Edward "Bud" Goodwin of Eliot; her sons, Bruce and his wife, Cheryl Goodwin, Raymond and Donna Goodwin and Warren Goodwin, all of Eliot; five grandchildren, Jyoti Goodwin, Kevin Goodwin, Shawn Goodwin, Joseph Goodwin and Laurie Malm, as well as five great-grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by an infant son, and brothers, Raymond and Henry Leach. A funeral will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m. in the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine with the Rev. Deb Shippe, officiating, a time of refreshment and fellowship will follow the service at the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. Friends may visit with Helen's family on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Family flowers only, donations may be made in her memory to the Eliot United Methodist Church, 238 Harold L. Dow Highway, Eliot, Maine 03903. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S.
