VERNON -- Helen Elizabeth Anderson, 88, who preferred to be known as Betty, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, at Vernon Green Nursing Home.Miss Anderson was born in Wilmington, Del., on June 17, 1919, the only child of Henry and Helen Moses (Nygren) Anderson. During her childhood and early adulthood, Miss Anderson lived in Westchester County, N.Y. and New York City. She was a graduate of Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., and worked in New York City as a graphic artist. After moving to Brattleboro, in addition to her freelance art work, Miss Anderson worked as an aide at Holton Home where she also lived for three years before going to Vernon Green in 2003.The Andersons were frequent visitors to Vermont and, in the mid-1930s, bought a house and land on Goodenough Road, which they used as a weekend and summer retreat for many years, making no modern improvements. After the deaths of her parents in 1968 and 1971, Miss Anderson took up residence in an apartment in West Brattleboro and devoted much of her time and energy to continuing her parents' commitment to the preservation of this unique late 18th century building, known to some as The Poets House and now known as the Stoddard-Goodenough House. In recent years, she transferred ownership of the property to a nonprofit organization, which she formed to perpetuate the work of preserving the farmstead in its original condition and to make it available for the study of 18th century house construction in the Connecticut River Valley.Miss Anderson had a great love for animals, especially cats. She was also an active member of the Brattleboro Floral Arts and Garden Club.At Miss Anderson's request, there will be no memorial or graveside service. Her ashes have been interred at the site of her parents burial lot in the Meeting House Cemetery where friends may pay their respects in private.Contributions in her memory may be made to Windham County Humane Society, Route 30, Brattleboro; Brattleboro Historical Society, P.O. Box 6392, Brattleboro; or Brattleboro Floral Arts and Garden Club, care of Fanny Speno, 33 Spruce St., Brattleboro.
