WINDHAM, N.H. -- Helen H. (Hermez) Carter, 76, a resident of Windham for 35 years and who lived in Salem for 10 years, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 15, at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. She was the wife of Richard A. Carter, with whom she celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on June 12.She was born in Lawrence, Mass., Oct. 10, 1930, daughter of the late Lewis and Julienne (Vandoorne) Hermez. She was educated in the Lawrence school system and continued her education for a business degree.Her family was a prominent part of the French-American community in Lawrence for many years.Mrs. Carter was employed at the Lawrence Mills and later worked as a librarian for four years at Raytheon Co., in Lowell and Waltham, Mass.After raising her family, she worked as a secretary for eight years at AT&T. Before retiring, she was a clerk at the Internal Revenue Service in Andover, Mass.She was a former member of the Riverside Congregational Church in Lawrence.In her earlier years, she enjoyed skiing, traveling, camping, square dancing, playing cards and tracing genealogy studies. Her travels took her through all the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America, and on ocean cruises with her family.She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by a wide circle of family and friends.Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Rhonda and Kevin Southwick of Merrimack, and Robyn Perez of Enfield; four grandchildren, Justin Hughes of Manchester, Meaghan Hughes of Merrimack, Christofer and Nicholas Perez, both of Enfield; an aunt, Yvonne Noiron of California; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
