January 19, 2009 Helen B. Anderson, 82, of Syracuse, died peacefully Monday, January 19, 2009, after a short illness and has donated her body to science. Helen spent her whole life working to improve the lives of others. She was born in NYC and graduated from Public School 97. She married James R. Anderson in 1944. Helen worked as a junior engineer for GE in Syracuse from 1944 to 1952. She raised her family and then went back to school and received her AA from OCC in 1972 with highest honors and a BA (74) and MSW (75) from Syracuse University with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors (74). She worked as the executive director of the Cortland County Office for the Aging (75-78), and then was the executive director for Planned Parenthood Center of Syracuse, where she retired in 1983. She continued to volunteer for the Caring Coalition and Hospice of Central New York. Her greatest personal achievement was serving on the board of trustees of OCC for 23 years, where she served many years as its chair, and was instrumental in overseeing the expansion of the school and campus. She also served as president of the board of the YWCA, Onondaga Citizens League and the Central New York chapter of the National Association of Social Work and was an active member in the United Negro College Fund, the Syracuse Peace Council, Thursday Morning Roundtable and the Democratic Club of Syracuse. Some of her many honors include Social Worker of the year NASW, Distinguished Alumni Award OCC, Meritorious Community Service Award Thursday Morning Round Table/SU, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Boards and Community Colleges. She is survived by her life partner and best friend, Alan Milair; her son, Jon (Wendy) Anderson of Northfield, VT; daughters, JamieLynn (Craig) Phinney of Skaneateles, NY, and Heidi Louise Anderson of Syracuse, NY; a brother, David Quinones of Camillus, NY; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Her family will receive friends at Greenleaf Funeral Home, 503 W. Onondaga St., Syracuse, Friday, January 30, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church, 14 Jamar Drive, Fayetteville, NY, Saturday, January 31, 2009, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Helen has requested that contributions be made in her name to the OCC Foundation, 4585 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215.
