MANCHESTER - Harriet "Polly" Williams, 90, died July 4, 2013, at Equinox Terrace in Manchester, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She was born March 22, 1923, in Bennington, the daughter of Frederick and Marjorie Simmons. She attended Bennington High School and Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. In 1943, she married Bill Barrows of Dorset, and they had three daughters. In 1973, Polly married Richard "Dick" Williams of Manchester and Fairfield, Conn. Mr. Williams predeceased her. Mrs. Williams enjoyed worldwide travel. She was an avid gardener with a landscape design degree from the New York Botanical Garden and she helped to create Southern Vermont Art Center's Botany Trail. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an avid genealogist, and she published a book, "Shortberry Cake," about her Vermont childhood. Survivors include three daughters, Susan, Sally and Belinda; a stepdaughter, Olwen, and stepson, David; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a cousin. The service will be private and burial will be in Dellwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ALS research. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Manchester Center.
