SMITH, Harriet Belle Gaston Dunaway (nee Medkeff),82, of Zephyrhills, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004 in Dade City. She is survived by her brother Paul Medkeff and his wife Joyce of Akron, Ohio; stepsons, Robert Smith and his wife Petra of Zephyrhills and Ronald Smith of Zephyrhills, Mike Dunaway and his wife Donna and step grandson Finis Dunaway, III all of Washington, D.C.; stepdaughters, Sharon Smith of Wellsburg, N.Y. and Carol Bushong and her husband John of Susquchanna, Penn., Donna VanPelt of Akron, Ohio, and Betty Bugni; nieces and nephews Susan Edwards and David Medkeff and his wife Betsa of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sherilyn Russell and her husband Bruce, Jim Medkeff and his wife Karen all of Akron, Ohio, and Diane, Rick, Jim and his wife Joanne Medkeff of Toledo, Ohio. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her loving husbands Fred Gaston, Finis "Dun" Dunaway and Bill Smith; and brothers Darwin and James Medkeff. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004 at Whitfield Fune ral Home Chapel with Rev. A.C. Bryant officiating. Interment will follow at Oakside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Mrs. Smith was born January 28, 1922 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to Charles Samuel and Mabelle (Kaga) Medkeff; she was raised in Akron, Ohio. Harriet was employed as a secretary for Attorneys Heimkamp, Matz & Petersilge and as a bookkeeper for the Quickey Manufacturing Company both in Akron, Ohio. Following her parents to the City of Pure Water and soft gentle breezes, she and her first husband moved to Zephyrhills in 1965. Harriet loved shuffleboard and was an avid player. She was inducted in to both The Florida and The National Shuffleboard Hall of Fame in 1978 and earned enough points to be inducted again many times over. She traveled to other countries to help establish the game of shuffleboard and to play in tournaments. She was still shuffling in April 2004 at the age of 82. Her loss will also be mou rned by the Shuffleboard Community and the many friends Harriet made during the 20 plus years she shuffled and special friends Joan and Dick Cook and Earl Ball.
