Helen Mary Galligan of Mt. Vernon was called by God into eternal life on Monday July 21, 2008. Helen, who was preparing to celebrate her 99th Birthday later this month, died peacefully in her sleep early Monday morning at the Wartburg Nursing Home. Born in New York City on July 31, 1909, she spent her early years in Ireland before returning to New York as a 16 year old. Helen worked for many years in the food service industry in Manhattan while raising a family. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. Helen lived a long and happy life with great faith in God and with kindness for everyone she met. She is survived by her two children, Maureen Galligan and Gregory Galligan, her daughter-in-law Regina Galligan, her two grandchildren, Kevin Galligan and Meghan Galligan, and her sister, Sr. Rita Burke, O.F. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews both in the United States and Ireland, all of whom loved her dearly. Helen was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Bartholomew, and by her two sisters and two brothers. Her sweet disposition, gentle nature and smiling face will be greatly missed! Visiting hours will be held at the Pelham Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass will be at St. Catherine's Church, Pelham, NY on Thursday at 10 AM.
