Gregory Robert Carter, 50 E. WATERBORO -- Gregory R. Carter, 50, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday evening, Feb. 24, 2014, from an aortic rupture at his home in East Waterboro. Greg was born on Aug. 12, 1963, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., to parents Robert H. Carter and Nancy Clarke Carter. At age seven, the family moved to Falmouth. Greg attended Falmouth public schools and graduated from Falmouth High School in 1982. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. Greg swam on his high school and college swim teams and served as an Assistant Swim Coach for Falmouth High School, Trinity College, and Bowdoin College. Greg received a Masters of Education Degree from the University of Virginia in 1990 and served as an Assistant Coach for the UVA Cavaliers Swim Team. In 2004, Greg entered the 'ETEP' graduate program at the University of Southern Maine where he earned a Master of Science degree in Teaching and Learning in 2006. As an intern for the ETEP program, Gregory served as an Education Technician at Greely Middle School. After completing ETEP, Greg taught 5th and 6th grade at Jordan Small Middle School in Raymond. In 2008, Gregory began teaching 8th grade Math and Science in South Portland at Mahoney Middle School. In 2012, Greg began teaching sixth grade math and science at Memorial Middle School. Greg often expressed how honored and grateful he was to work with such outstanding individuals and educators. Greg was committed to giving back and he helped support his outdoor pursuits by being an active environmentalist, conservationist, and supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, Waterkeepers Alliance, the Ruffed Grouse Society and Stripers Forever. He enjoyed reading and learning about a wide variety of topics including land and water conservation, water quality, fly fishing, upland bird hunting, and U.S. Colonial History. Like his father before him, Greg was an avid fly fisherman and upland bird hunter. He eagerly awaited and anticipated the spring arrival of the 'Stripers' and the chance to head out to the beach and cast with his faithful fishing friends, Kevin and Mike as well as his brother, Steve. As the stripers left and the leaves changed, Greg's gaze turned inland and upland, toward woodcock and grouse cover. Following a tradition passed down to him from his father, Robert and mentor, Ralph, Greg cherished the time he spent out in the woods scanning for birds with Steve, Mike, son Jacob, nephew Jacob, brother-in-law Paul, and many, devoted spaniels. Greg's enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his 'spiritual home' on Millen Lake in Washington, N.H. Some of his happiest childhood memories were made at 'the lake' with his parents, brother Steve, aunts and uncles, 'Connecticut Cousins,' and treasured family friends, the Otterson Family and the Flock Family. Greg enjoyed spending Gregory Robert Carter time at the lake with his nieces, Isabelle and Becky, and his nephew Jacob. He was delighted that Janet, Jacob, and Emily also loved being at Millen and that he was able to share and pass-on his love of 'the lake' to his wife and children. Greg was a loving husband to wife Janet Lamoreau Carter and a devoted father to his twin son and daughter, Jacob Lamoreau Cyr and Emily Lamoreau Cyr. Greg was delighted to share his love of upland bird hunting with son, Jacob. As a former swimmer and coach, Greg was thrilled that his daughter, Emily shared his passion for swimming and that she qualified for the State Championship Swim Meet. He enjoyed attending and watching Jacob and Emily's concerts, competitions, and sports events. Greg enjoyed traipsing through backyard trails, training his beloved bird dog, 'Rip,' with his family close in tow. Greg's love and devotion helped his family to flourish and he brought them great joy. Greg's extraordinary love and devotion were also clearly evident in the commitment he had and care he gave to his mother after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Greg had an extraordinary ability to put people at ease and to be able to converse with individuals from a wide-variety of backgrounds and experiences. He had a great sense of humor and he was well-known for his quick wit and remarkable memory. Greg's family will deeply miss and forever cherish his loving, kind, gentle, and generous spirit. Gregory was predeceased by his parents, Robert Carter and Nancy Carter. He is survived by his wife, Janet; his twins, Jacob and Emily; his brother Steve Carter and wife Nina Otterson Carter of Washington, N.H., along with their children, Isabelle Carter, Rebecca Carter, Jacob Carter and Angela Lunderville; mother- in-law, Marilyn Clark of East Waterboro; and brother-in-law, Paul Lamoreau and wife Nadine of Presque Isle. Gregory is also survived by his uncle Dave and aunt Dot Clarke of Vernon, Conn., uncle Ray and aunt Cynthia Tripplehorn of Montana; and many special cousins. He is also remembered by cherished friends, Michael Chelminski and Elizabeth Annand of Durham, Kevin and Nora Hoye of Portland, Dave and Beth Burchill and children of Kennebunk, Tom and Phoebe Madden and children of Warwick, R.I.; as well as the Flock family. He also leaves behind his special friends, Derek and En, whom he enjoyed visiting in England. A celebration of Gregory's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Alfred Parish Church, 12 Kennebunk Rd., in Alfred. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
