->Gloria J. FreemanPoughkeepsie - In the early evening hours on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, Gloria A. Freeman slipped from earthly sorrows and quietly entered eternal rest at the Pines Skilled Nursing Facility, Poughkeepsie, NY.The oldest of five daughters, born to the late David M. and Lillian Johnson Jackson, Gloria was born August 3, 1933, and was a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, NY.Gloria was educated in the City of Poughkeepsie School System graduating from Poughkeepsie High School in 1951. Determined to pursue her passion, she enrolled in Harlem Hospital School of Nursing, Harlem, NY. After graduating in 1954, she received her license to practice as a registered nurse. She worked in various nursing positions at several local institutions, to include St. Francis Hospital, Vassar Brothers Hospital, and as a Head Nurse and Nursing Supervisor at Hudson River State Hospital (HRSH).Previously married to Robert (Bucky) Freeman in 1955, of this union they became proud parents of two daughters. After 17 challenging years of nursing practice at HRSH, Gloria accepted another challenge with an invested interest in geriatrics, Gloria decided to make her dream a reality and established The Academy Home for Adults, a seven bedroom house located at 96 Academy Street. She obtained approval from the State of New York Board of Social Welfare as a private proprietary home for adults. The Academy Home for Adults was certified on December 27, 1971.As time passed Gloria purchased an additional house at 98 Academy Street, allowing her to increase The Academy Home by providing five additional bedrooms.The Academy Home was truly a home for 18 residents. Gloria received ongoing outstanding evaluations from the State Commission for quality of care for the mentally disabled. It was rated among the top five of 47 facilities inspected by the State Commission.After 21 years of dedicated service, Gloria reluctantly closed the doors to The Academy Home but not without inviting her residents and employees to dinner to say good-bye and wish them farewell. She later converted The Academy Home to a single room occupancy facility. The home was eventually sold.At an early age Gloria accepted Christ and became a member of Smith Street A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of Rev. Arthur E. May.As a leader and with all her skills and knowledge, she was not finished. Along with John Byrd, the two co-founded the Leo Social and Civic Club. She was a former member of the Twinks; served on the Catharine Street Community Center, bingo committee; member of Mended Hearts; basketball player on Catharine Street Community Center women's team; she bowled on The Hi- Low Mix and Hi-Tri Ladies Leagues; score keeper and statistician for the local Shaughnessy Tile Softball Team; organized annual bus trips to Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and organized several cruises to Caribbean and Alaska. She also worked with migrant workers in Modena, NY. She was truly a giver and looked out for others. Gloria will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Kimberly A. Freeman of Charlotte, NC and Stephanie R. Miller, (Carlos) of Wake Forest, NC; her caring and devoted companion, Andrew (Lee) Becoates; grandsons, Jason L. Freeman of Poughkeepsie, NY, Troy Freeman-Brumfield of Charlotte, NC granddaughter, Jada S. Miller of Wake Forest, NC, and great granddaughter, Arianna L. Freeman of Poughkeepsie, NY; sisters, Elise J. White (William) of Silver Spring, MD, Frances M. Hancock (Ronald) of Raleigh, NC, Barbara D. Anderson, Poughkeepsie, NY, a dedicated niece, Brenda A. Johnson, (Theodore) of Poughkeepsie, NY, two aunts, Anna V. Thomas of Poughkeepsie, NY, Ella Jackson of Astoria NY, close cousins, Edith Quarles (Charles) of New York, George Johnson (Betty) of North Carolina, loving and devoted friends, Joseph and Esther Johnson of Poughkeepsie, NY, Godchildren Carolyn Johnson-Gilbert of Bowie, MD and Andrea Dixon- Williams of Raleigh, NC; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Mrs. Freeman will lay in repose 10-11 a.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Beulah Baptist Church, 92 Catharine Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. Service 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Jesse V. Bottoms, Jr. will officiate. Entombment at the Community Mausoleum at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
