WADLEY, Ga. - Mrs. Gloria H. Carter, 81, of 420 W. Calhoun St., Wadley, Ga., died Friday, May 27,2011, at the Jefferson Hospital in Louisville, Georgia. The funeral will be Monday, May 30, at 11 :00 am at the Wadley Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Harrison, Rev. Rusty Manning and Rev. Gary Carter officiating. Burial will be at Wadley Baptist Cemetery, Wadley, Ga. Mrs. Carter was a native of Wadley, Georgia. She was the 1946 Valedictorian graduate of Wadley High School and a 1950 graduate of Georgia College with a degree in Business Administration. She later earned her Master's Degree in Education as a Media Specialist from Georgia Southern University. Mrs. Carter, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, was a lifelong member of Wadley Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She served as a Sunday School teacher for several years, was an active member of the WMU, and served as church pianist for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She also went on several mission trips with the Georgia Baptist Builders, the Hephzibah Baptist Association and Habitat for Humanity. One of these trips involved a week of mission work in Panama. For several years she served as Media Specialist at Carver Elementary School and was an active member of the PT A and other school and youth activities. For many years she also organized and led music services and activities at the Glendale Nursing Home. Survivors include her husband, O.W. Carter, two sons Dr. Glenn Carter (Becky) of Hinesville, Ga., and Gary Carter (Barbara) of DeLand, Fl., one daughter Carol Justice (Graham) of Wadley, and four grandchildren Robert and Rebecca Carter, and Sydney and John Carter. Pallbearers will be Dr. Dudley Gunn, David Gunn, Paul Ledger, Benjie Leaptrott, Bobby Weeks, Charles Smith, Bobby Brett and Lintorn Brett. Members of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and deacons of the Wadley Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Wadley Baptist Church on Sunday evening, May 29. Also, the family will receive friends at the home ofO.W. Carter, 420 W. Calhoun St., Wadley, Ga. Smith Funeral Home of Wadley, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions be made to Wadley Baptist Church Building Fund, Gideon's International or Habitat for Humanity.
