Peters, Gloria AugustaMarch 24, 1922 - Oct. 22, 2010Gloria Augusta Peters, age 88, of Englewood, Fla., passed away peacefully Oct. 22, 2010. She was born March 24, 1922, in Cleveland. In 1979, she and her husband moved to Englewood from Toledo, Ohio. Before raising her family of five children she worked as a registered nurse. Her life was one of service to her Savior, her family, and the community. She took great pleasure in raising the spirits of those she met during her 25 years of delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a certified crew member of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 87 and served as its secretary for several years. Mrs. Peters worked as both a poll worker and a precinct captain in local elections. Her beautiful voice was a mainstay of congregational singing and she was president of the women's group at the Church of the Lutheran Confession (North Port) where she worshipped. Her love of God's creation was reflected in her efforts in the early days of sea turtle conservation when she monitored nests and rehabilitated newly emerged nestlings before their release to the sea. Her interest in gardening in general and orchids in particular kept her active throughout most of her years.She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert; two sons, Leonard R. Peters of Burnsville, N.C., and the Rev. Gordon J. Peters in Salem, Ore.; and three daughters, Sara Jean Peters of Collins, Mo., Ardie E. Peters of Morgantown, N.C., and Lori Straits of Venice, Fla. She will be missed by her ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She leaves three sisters, Marilynn Melcher of Brighton, Mich., Georgine Voelzke of Hudson, Mich., and Alberta Blisch of Cleveland.Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 25, 2010, at Farley Funeral Home in Venice, 265 S. Nokomis Ave., with services at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow at Sarasota National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Student Aid Fund of Immanuel Lutheran College in Eau Claire, Wis.
