Gladys Jones Henderson, 101, died Aug. 15, 2005.Mrs. Henderson was born July 10, 1904, in Waterloo, Lauderdale County, Ala., to James J. Jones and Rachel Cannon Jones.Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. Aug. 17 at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Dale Capron. Burial will follow in Tuscumbia Oakwood Cemetery.Mrs. Henderson was a former school teacher in the Colbert County System. Later, she was employed by Colbert County, where she worked under Judge John B. Sockwell. She was the first female justice of the peace in Alabama. She was appointed by Gov. Chauncey Sparks in 1943 and served effective for 30 years, until the abolishment of justice of the peace office.She was a lifelong member of First Methodist Church in Tuscumbia. She was an active member in the Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, Tennessee Valley Country Club and Tennessee Valley Historical Society, having served in many notable positions.She was preceded in death by her husband, George Halsey Henderson.Mrs. Henderson is survived by one niece, Rachel Wesson Doster, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one nephew, Tom Jones and wife, Violet, of Sheffield; and a number of great-nieces and nephews.Pallbearers include Dale Spann, Warren Crouch, Charlie Carmichael, James Marks, Leon Sockwell and Reynolds Craig.Honorary pallbearers include Roscoe O'Bannon, Dr. Howard Gamble, Charlie Wade and Dr. James D. Ashmore.The family extends a special thanks to her caregivers, Ida Kauffman, Lucy Hallmark and Shirley Pace, and to Southern Care Hospice.Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia.Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, is directing.
