Avis de décès de Gladys-Eileen Smith

Gladys Eileen Smith November 2, 1928 - October 29, 2014 It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Eileen in the early hours of October 29th (just 4 days short of her 86th birthday). She is survived by her loving family, son David (Brenda), daughter-in-law Laurie (Len), grandchildren Kevin and Talia, and nieces Linda and Kathy and their families in Alberta. She was predeceased in 1995 by her husband Hugh and her son Richard (Rick), her sister Evelyn earlier this year, and her parents Arnold and Margaret Foster. She will be missed and fondly remembered by friends in New Zealand and the Greater Vancouver area. Eileen was born in Edmonton. Moves by the family to Powell River and then Vancouver followed. Eileen married Hugh in 1950 and they raised their sons in Burnaby and Coquitlam. After the boys left home, there were moves back to Burnaby and then to Maple Ridge where Eileen spent the rest of her years. Eileen was employed by Burnaby Public Library for more than 30 years. During her working tenure, she served in various positions for her Union Local CUPE 23. After retiring, Eileen served on the Hospital Board and Library Board in Maple Ridge and also volunteered for Hospice. In recent years, Eileen volunteered with Seniors Helping Seniors. Music always played an important part in Eileen's life, from singing with the Sweet Adelines in her younger years, to many road trips with Hugh to jazz festivals all over North America, and singing for several years with the Silvertones in Maple Ridge. Eileen loved to travel and had some memorable trips to New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Haida Gwai, England, and France to name a few. Eileen was a talented artist. Her portrait paintings and colourful landscapes grace the walls of many homes. The family would like to thank the staff in the PATH Unit at Ridge Meadows Hospital for their compassionate care of Eileen over the last 4 weeks of her life. As per Eileen's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, if desired, please donate to The Canadian Marfan Association in memory of Eileen.
