George Russell Wing Sr., 86 PORTLAND -- George Russell Wing, Sr., 86, passed away April 29, 2008, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Portland on June 22, 1921, the son of William W. Wing and Margaret Coffin Wing, the youngest of six children. He attended local schools graduating from Portland High School where he excelled in academics and sports, especially football and baseball. Before entering WW II in 1942, he married Virginia Roberts Wing, his childhood sweetheart, in the First Parish Church, Portland. They met in the 8th grade in Cummings School in Portland. He served in the Navy on the U.S. Battleship Arkansas from 1942- 1945 at Normandy and Iwo Jima. After the service in 1945 he worked at the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company as an Outside Plant Engineer retiring in 1981. He was a lifetime member of the Pioneers. He was a self-made success story; he worked very hard and was able to enjoy 27 years of active retirement with his beloved wife, Ginnie, playing golf, dancing, singing, traveling, picnicking on local beaches, attending and rooting for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sports activities and school events. George was a member of the Woodfords Club of Portland, the Elks Club, the American Legion; he was a lifetime associate member of the Italian Heritage Club and Riverside Golf Course. He served as treasurer of the First Parish Church for many years and was a member of the Men's Group actively participating in the church's Friday noon Fish Chowder Lunches peeling and cooking potatoes. His brother, William Wing and sisters, Iva Morse and Margaret Sturdivant of Portland predeceased him. He is survived by his wife; sisters, Edna Andreasen and Francis Johnson of Portland; George Russell Wing Sr. Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home & Cremation Service 775-3763 son, George R. Wing Jr. and his wife Diana Dunlap Wing of Ridgewood, N.J., and daughter, Candis Wing MacDuffie and her husband Daniel MacDuffie of Portland. George had six grandchildren, Karen Wing Feldhahn, Ridgewood, N.J., Krisi Wing Behrens, Wyckoff, N.J., George III, Ridgewood, Amy MacDuffie Hill, Portland, Abby MacDuffie Munson, Chelmsford, Mass., Danny MacDuffie, Alliance, Ohio and ten great-grandchildren, Brendan and Stephanie Behrens. Katy, Timmy and Molly Feldhahn, Luke, Emily and Sophie Hill, Drew and Bryn Munson; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Wing enjoyed many hobbies including crossword puzzles, weekly men's lunches and golf games and he was a dedicated Red Sox and Sea Dogs supporter. He was kind and soft spoken with a quiet demeanor and a good sense of humor devoted to his family, his biggest fans. The Wing family wishes to extend its appreciation to the Maine Medical Center staff of doctors, nurses and technicians in the Emergency Room and the Special Care Unit. Visiting hours will be held from 4-8 p.m., on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008.
