George Wesley Matthews, of 720 North Main Street, Cross Hill, S.C., went to be with his Heavenly Father this Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, after a battle with cancer.George leaves behind his wife and partner of 61 years, Azalee Pittman Matthews.He was born in Keene, N.H., on June 22, 1922, to Earl Thurston and Elsie Willis Matthews.He was in the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II. Returning from overseas in 1945, George went into wholesale plumbing and retired from Anchor Supply in Clinton S.C. in 1987. In 1971 George and Lee built and ran Tall Pines Campground on Lake Greenwood until 1998. He loved to bowl and square dance. He graduated from Parker High School and The Dale Carnegie Course. He will be forever known for his jokes. He was telling them up until his last days. George was a member of the Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church of Cross Hill. He loved the people there for their kindness and love.He is survived by a son and his wife, George William (Bill) and Cheryl Jordan Matthews, of Lexington; a daughter and her husband, Patricia M. (Pat) and David L. Coleman Sr., of Cross Hill; grandchildren, Greg and Kim Matthews, of Greenwood, S.C., Lori and Mark Toney, of Bakersville, N.C., Alex Daye of New York, N.Y., Caroline Daye, of Athens, Ga., Christel and Lance E. Godwin, of Gray Court, S.C., and David L. Coleman Jr., of Cross Hill, S.C.; and 12 great grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother, Don and his wife, Dottie, Matthews of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and a sister, Barbara Whitehead, of Commerce, Ga.; his sisters-in-law, Annie Matthews of Groose Creek and Nita Pittman Brown , who was like a daughter to him.He was preceded in death, by his oldest brother, Willis Matthews, his brother, Daniel Matthews and his youngest brother, Jack Matthews.The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church Social Hall in Cross Hill, immediately followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Trevor Downey.In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the building fund of the Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, 200 W.
