George J. Starr 1931-2012 EAST LONGMEADOW - George J. Starr, 81, of East Long-meadow died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Baystate Medical Center. George, son of the late John and Najepi "Nellie" (Dow) Starr was born in Springfield on May 14, 1931. Raised in Springfield, George attended Springfield Trade High School. George was an insurance agent for 40 years and started working for Allstate and then owned and operated his own agency of Briggs and Starr Insurance Agency on Boston Road in Wilbraham for 12 years. He also worked as a car salesman for Better Used Cars and amongst several other dealerships. George has resided in East Longmeadow for the past 45 years and was daily communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Church, Springfield. He served his country during Korea and the Chinese Spring Offensive with the United States Air Force. George attained the rank of Airman Second Class. He was an avid jogger and New York Giants fan. George played the drums in a jazz band, ran for the Springfield City Council during the 1950's, and helped his parents run their mom and pop variety known as Starr Variety on Walnut Street in Springfield. In addition to his parents, George was pre-deceased by a daughter, Cynthia Daly. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Geraldine A. (Manning) Starr; three sons, Jon M. Starr of East Longmeadow, Jeffrey A. Starr and his wife Robin of Raleigh, NC, and David A. Starr of Springfield; a daughter, Susan A. Croteau and her husband George of Chicopee; his son-in-law, Thomas W. Daly of Westfield; a sister, Gladys Thomas of Myrtle Beach, SC; four grandchildren; Derek, Chloe, George and his wife Suzanne, and Brian and his wife Jill; a great grandson, Sean; a cousin Maria Kuselias of Wilbraham; along with many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours for George will be held on Monday, November 26, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sampson's Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. His funeral will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 8 a.m. at the funeral home followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 1900 Allen Street, Springfield. Rites of Committal and Interment with Military Honors will be held in the Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Memorial contributions in George's memory may be made to Baystate Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 280 Chestnut Street, 6th Floor, Springfield, MA 01199.
