George H. St. Onge, 89, of Bernardsville, N.J., passed away in his sleep on Jan. 19, 2011, after a brief illness. Mr. St. Onge was a Bernardsville resident since 1959, coming with his family from Matawan Borough, N.J. In recent years, he had also lived in Washington D.C., and Selbyville, Del. He was predeceased in 2007 by Patricia, his wife of 59 years; in 1974 by his son, Timothy, and in 2009 by his grandson, Peter. Mr. St. Onge was a native of Meriden, Conn.; he attended local schools there and graduated from Meriden High School in 1938. He entered The Catholic University of America in 1941 and, following military service, graduated with a bachelor of electrical engineering degree in 1948. Mr. St. Onge met his future wife while she served as secretary to the dean of the School of Social Work at the Catholic University of America. He received a master of science degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1952. In World War II, Mr. St. Onge served in photo intelligence with the Ninth Air Force in five European campaigns from Normandy through Central Europe, attaining the rank of captain. He was a member of the Air Force Reserve from 1946 to 1957. He was employed by Exxon Research and Engineering Company and its predecessors for 37 years, retiring as an engineering advisor in 1985. His specialties were electrical power systems and electrical safety for petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants. After retirement, he was a self-employed consultant. Mr. St. Onge lived with his family from 1961 to 1963 in The Hague, Netherlands, and 1973 to 1974 in Brussels, Belgium. He was an avid traveler, and had toured the Soviet Union, Europe, Ireland, the British Isles and the Scandinavian countries, as well as the southern and western U.S. Mr. St. Onge was a life member of the Ninth Air Force Association and The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was a member of the National Fire Protection Association, serving on technical committees for electrical workplace safety and for electrical equipment application and maintenance. From 1974 to 1984, he served as chairman of the American Petroleum Institute Electrical Equipment Committee. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville, N.J., and had been a member of its finance council and school committee. He is survived by his children, Joseph E. St. Onge of Yonkers, N.Y., Monica St. Onge of Bedminster, N.J., Maureen St. Onge Lathrop of Briarcliff, N.Y., Margaret St. Onge of New York, George H. St. Onge II of Rumson, N.J., Joan St. Onge Miller of Weston, Fla., and Paul St. Onge of Bernardsville, N.J., and by 16 grandchildren. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Memorial Mass to be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of George St. Onge to The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress at http://www.loc.gov/vets.
