George H. Adams Sr. PORTLAND -- George H. Adams Sr. departed this life peacefully of a broken heart on Feb. 26, 2013. He was born in Portland on April 29, 1925, one of five children to Peter and Sadie (Johnston) Adams. At the age of 17, he enlisted into the Army with his father's signature. He served with the 1st Army under General George Patton. He was very proud of being a WWII veteran but never spoke much about his time in the military. He had said that he lost to many friends. George was involved in several battles during his time in Europe which included the D-Day Invasion landing on Omaha Beach. the Battle of the Rhine River, Haggdon Forest as well as others. He helped liberate one of the concentration camps. Following the war, he was on 'borrowed time.' At the age of 75 he was the first person in Maine to be awarded his diploma after Gov. Angus King had signed a law that awarded diplomas to veterans that never graduated who had enlisted in the service. Mr. Adams had worked as a truck driver for American Can Co., Congdon Transportation and Sanborn's Express until his retirement. Following the war, he met his wife of 65 years, the former Margaret Sylvester. It was 'love at first sight for him.' They fell in love and were soon married at the Preble Street Church. Together, they stayed active as a couple working for weight watchers, playing golf and participating in bowling leagues. George's strength was his love and devotion to his family. He and Margaret were the adopted grandparents of many. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret on Jan. 24, 2013; and by three brothers and a sister. Survivors include two sons, George Jr. and his wife Alona of Port Orchard, Wash., Peter and his wife Lorrie of Hollis Center; six grandchildren, Eliseo Adams and his wife Amanda of Florida, Sarah Sanborn and her fiance Ryan Hodgkin of Sebago, Lacey Leighton of Portland, Ryan Adams and his fiance Ashley Stowe of Auburn, Jeremy Sanborn and his wife Kelly of Buxton and Kristen Adams of Buxton; nine great-grandchildren, Jason, Leann, Ben, Lillian, Jordan, Annabelle, Lily Grace, Mollie Ellen and Hannah Margaret; and one sister, Gladys Knowlton.
