Geneva Mae Johnson, 85 PORTLAND -- Geneva Mae Johnson, 85, passed away on Jan. 11, 2013, at St. Joseph's Manor after a period of declining health. Geneva was born at St. Barnabus Hospital on Woodford Street in Portland on July 4, 1927. She was the only child of Montford B. Tibbetts of Herman and Grace L. Winslow of Yarmouth. Geneva graduated from Deering High School in 1945 and became a Registered Nurse after graduating from the former New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. After receiving her nursing degree, she returned to Portland to work as a nurse at the Portland City Hospital, now known as the Barron Center, where she eventually became the head nurse. She married Herbert M. Johnson on May 8, 1949, and continued working on and off as a nurse while she raised their three children, living first on Ray Street, and then on Alba Street, and then on Hennessey Drive. Geneva was a loving mother and had many friends in the greater Portland area. She was a communicant at Central Square Baptist Church for many years, and enjoyed participating in the many social functions sponsored by the church. She was a wonderful cook and loved to host family gatherings in her small kitchen. She was an avid reader, and for many years enjoyed meeting monthly with a small group of close friends for card games. She greatly enjoyed raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved animals, and loved to feed the wild birds. She was rarely without a dog or cat to care for. She particularly loved her dogs Cleo, Tigger and Nikki, and in later years her Abyssinian cat, Sydney. She was predeceased by her parents; and her former husband, Herbert Johnson. She is survived by her son Edward Johnson of Windham, her daughter Diana Johnson and her husband Patrick Norton of Freeport, her son Thomas Johnson and his wife Lisa of Kennebunk; five grandchildren, Julie, Nathaniel, Renee, Benjamin, and Tessa; and one great-grandchild, Alexander. Geneva's family wishes to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Manor for the wonderful care that they provided for her in her final months. In accordance to Geneva's wishes arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral memorial service on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at 10 a.m., at the funeral home, with the Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating. A reception will follow in Memorial Hall at the Woodford's Congregational Church, across the road from the funeral home. Following the reception, interment will be at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland. Please visit www.jonesrichandhutchins.com for additional information and to sign Geneva's guestbook.
