George J. Ames, financier and philanthropist, died on Friday, February 2, 2001 at his home in Rye, New York. He was 83 years old. Mr. Ames was a limited managing director of Lazard Freres & Co., LLC. He joined the firm in 1937 and became a General Partner in 1957. Mr. Ames was chairman emeritus of the Louis August Jonas Foundation and treasurer and a director of the Meyer Foundation. He was a member and past chairman of the advisory board of St. Vincent's Hospital in Westchester, and chairman emeritus of the Columbia College Board of Visitors where he completed an eight-year term in 1966. He was a director of the DeWitt and Lila Wallace Foundation for the Hudson Highlands. He was vice-president and a trustee of Hartley House, a New York City settlement house. Mr. Ames has been a member of the Board of Trustees of New York Medical College since 1990. He was chairman and a director of the Ames Family Fund, Inc. He was a recipient of the John Jay Award and Alexander Hamilton Award of Columbia University and the Trilliam Cullan Bryant Award of New York Medical College. He was the First Honoree of St. Vincent's Hospital, Westchester. Mr. Ames was born in Manhattan and was predeceased by his parents, George S. and Catherine D. Ames. Mr. Ames received a B.A. from Columbia College in 1937 and a J.D. from Fordham Law School in 1943. He was an officer in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Loesser in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Ames was a communicant of the Archdiocese of New York and the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. He was installed in the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in 1983. Surviving are his wife, Bess R. Ames, of Rye, NY; four daughters, Ruth A. Solie of Northampton, MA, Joan A. Berkowitz of Guilford, CT; Margery E. Ames of New York, NY and Dorothy A. Cummings of Skillman, NJ; his step-children, Paula S. Butler and Charles David Sammons, of Rye, NY; a sister, Dorothy Demers of Austin, TX and seven grandchildren, John Solie, Jonathan and Rachel Berkowitz and Michael, Kristin, Dillon and Quinlan Cummings. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marion Patterson Ames and his brother, Raymond Ames. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Church of the Resurrection, Rye, NY on Wednesday, February 7 at 10 am. The family will receive friends at the William Graham Funeral Home, 1036 Boston Post Road, Rye, NY on Monday, February 5 from 7-9 pm and Tuesday, February 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Burial will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to Hartley House, with which he was associated since childhood, Hartley House, 413 West 46th Street, New York, NY 10036.
