GLASTONBURY, Conn. -- Frederick A. Ames died unexpectedly of a heart attack on April 2, 2010, doing one of the things he loved the most, riding his bicycle.He was born Sept. 6, 1957, in Waterville, Maine, the son of Aratus "Joe" and Doris (Joler) Ames. Fred was part of a military family who lived and traveled throughout the East Coast. Fred attended 10 different schools, and graduated from Duncan Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. He joined the Navy immediately after graduation in 1975. He retired as an electronics technician senior chief petty officer in 1995 following 20 years of active service. Fred spent most of his Navy career in California, where he was attached to several duty stations including surface ships, tenders, naval schools and a naval weapons station. Fred was employed as the technology specialist for Rocky Hill Public Schools for more than 10 years. The superintendent commented that Fred was a tremendously dedicated and valuable employee who will be extremely difficult to replace.Fred was much loved by many. He was a loving and caring person. Fred loved his family and especially being a father. Two of his favorite pastimes were watching Kelly's soccer games and Brian's crew regattas.Fred is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lisa (St. Onge) Ames; two children, Brian and Kelly Ames of Glastonbury; his mother, Doris (Joler) Ames of Skowhegan, Maine; two sisters, Ann (Ames) Lutton and her husband, Robert, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Connie (Ames) Merrill and her husband, Stephen, of Skowhegan; brother Mark Ames of Gouldsboro; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.Fred was predeceased by his father, Aratus Ames Jr., and grandparents Aratus and Louise (Sincyr) Ames and Leo and Evangeline (Mathew) Joler.A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 24 at the Fairview Cemetery in Canaan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.
