Francis Sterns Perry, 83 BRUNSWICK -- Francis Sterns Perry, 83, of Falmouth, died on June 28, 2006, at home surrounded by his family, after a lengthy illness. He and his wife have been residing in Brunswick with their daughter since November 2005. He was born in Bath on July 28, 1922, the son of William J. and Agnes Colby Perry. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse in 1941. In 1946 he entered Portland Junior College, then transferred to Bowdoin from where he graduated in 1950. He received his Master's degree from the University of Maine in 1957. He also did further graduate work at Middlebury Language School of French and German, Tufts School of Languages, Duke University and Bowdoin Summer School of Physics. During World War II he was trained as a Naval Aviator and rose to the rank of Lt. (j.g.). Although he saw no action he was qualified as a day-fighter pilot and later trained as a night-fighter pilot. From 1950 to 1953 he was a teacher at Freeport High School and Principal from 1953 to 1956. He was instrumental in forming the Freeport High School Band in the early 1950s. During 1956 and 1957, he was head of the math department at Miss Hall's, and in 1957 to 1958 he was head of the science department at Dana Hall. In 1958 to 1961 he was headmaster of Peacham Academy in Vermont. From 1961 to 1963 he taught Math and French at Bigelow Junior High School in Newton, Mass. From 1963 to 1989 he served as a Math, French and Physics teacher at Deering High School. In addition, he worked as an English and Math instructor at the Portland Adult Evening High School as well as a Math and French instructor at University of Southern Maine. His avocation was instrumental music. He played with The Generation Gap, The 60 plus Band, and various other groups. He was a life member of the NEA and the Cumberland County Retired Teachers' Association, as well as a 50-plus year member of the Freeport, Maine Masons. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Powers Perry, whom he married on June 5, 1948; as well as three children, William W. Perry of Topsham, Mark E. Perry of Falmouth and Katherine E. Perry of Brunswick; two grandchildren, Kurt F. Perry and Emily K. Perry; and a niece, Jane Bailey of Brunswick. At the request of the deceased there will be no funeral services.
