Avis de décès de Francis-Michael Sullivan

Sullivan, Brother Francis Michael C.S.C. RHINEBECK Brother Francis Michael Sullivan, C.S.C. died on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Archcare's Ferncliff Nursing Home after a long illness. Brother Francis was 78 years old and was member of the Congregation of Holy Cross for 58 years. Francis Michael Sullivan was born in Somerset, Mass. on May 23, 1934, the second child of Leo D. And Hilda C. (O'Connell) Sullivan. The Sullivan family were communicants in Somerset's St. Patrick's Church. It was there that he was baptized and confirmed. Young Francis received his elementary education at the Pottersville School in Somerset from which he graduated in June 1948. He pursued his secondary education at Msgr. James Coyle High School in nearby Taunton, Mass., receiving his diploma in June 1952. During his high school years, he was employed part time and summers locally as a farm worker, a golf caddy, a stock boy and a playground supervisor. Francis entered the Congregation of Holy Cross as a candidate for the brotherhood on September 9, 1952 at St. Joseph Juniorate in Valatie. On February 1, 1953, he received the holy habit and the title, Brother, at St. Joseph Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Ind. A year later, he pronounced his first vows, and made his final profession of vows on August 16, 1957 at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, Queens. Brother Francis pursued his higher education at the University of Notre Dame, St. Edward's University and Fordham University, receiving his bachelor's degree from the latter in June 1964. He spent his active religious life in apostolates conducted by the Brothers of Holy Cross in New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. As a teacher, he was an instructor in elementary school classes. On the secondary level, his concentration was in industrial arts and printing. Beginning in 1986, Brother Francis devoted his talents to maintenance work in his apostolic assignment. Brother Francis retired from active life to St. Joseph Center in Valatie in 2004. Deteriorating health made it necessary for him to be placed in a total care facility where he eventually died. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Boland of Warren, R.I. and by nephews and nieces. A wake service will be held in the Chapel of St. Joseph's Center in Valatie at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 13 at 11 a.m. in the same chapel. Interment will follow immediately in the Holy Cross Community Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph's Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Joseph Center Retirement Fund.
