Francis M. Malone, 89, Sarasota, died May 10, 2003. He was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Alvin, Texas, and came to Sarasota 16 years ago from Alexandria, Va. He retired in 1973 as an electronic engineer for the Navy Department, and was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He studied at Corcoran School of Art and was an award-winning sculptor. He was a member of Gulf Gate Golf Club, Miata Club of Southwest Florida, and the U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veteran Association. Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Hyde); a daughter, Darby of San Jose, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Susan Belden of Troy, Mich.; a son, Steven of Silver Spring, Md.; stepsons Wright Leaphart of Atascadero, Calif., Brian Hyde of Sarasota and Derwin Hyde of Newton, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be private. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Gulf Gate Chapel. Inurnment will be in Arlington, Va., National Cemetery.
