->Norwich - Francis E. Maguire, 91, of 14 Teddy Lane, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at The William W. Backus Hospital.He was born in Roxbury, Mass. to the late Edwin J. and Anna (Adams) Maguire. After high school, he attended Duke University. He was the husband of Eleanor (Mullen) Maguire who predeceased him on Sept. 22, 1997. They were married in Lawrence, Mass. in St. Patrick's Church on Dec. 14, 1938.Mr. Maguire was a U.S. Navy Submarine Veteran having served 20 years as a World War II, Korean conflict and Vietnam War participant retiring as senior chief engineman, Chief of The Boat in USS Sea Robin (SS407). During his tenure he served on three submarines, USS Haddo (SS255) during World War II completing four successful war patrols, USS Sea Owl (SS405), and USS Sea Robin (SS407) during the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. He also completed a five year teaching tour at Submarine School, New London, and a two year tour on the Deputy ComSubLant Staff for Engineering and Material Readiness of submarines in the Atlantic Fleet.He retired after 12 years from the City of Norwich Dept. of Public Utilities. He was also a member of the BPOE#430, Fleet Reserve, Branch #20, Saints Peter and Paul Church, and a life member of Submarine Veterans of WWII Holland Club.He is survived by a son, Edwin J. Maguire, Retired USN Lt. Commander and his wife, Ellen, of Waterford and Delray Beach, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Anne Marie and Richard Canova of Bozrah; grandchildren, Richard and Cheryl Canova Jr. of Griswold, Jodi and Philip Canova-Moore of Franklin, Barry and Melissa Canova of Norwich, Troy Maguire of Lee Vining, Calif., and Shawn and Kristy Maguire of Old Lyme; great-grandchildren, Melissa and Michael Tetreault of W.Va., Joseph Canova of Griswold, Meghan Canova of Norwich, Connor Maguire of Old Lyme, and Reese Maguire of Old Lyme; great-great-grandchildren, Michael, Brianna, Caitlyn and Zachary Tetreault of W.Va.; and friend and companion, Josephine Benson.Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Elizabeth St., Norwich, meeting directly at church. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sts. Peter & Paul Church or in Mr. Maguire's own words, "have a good strong straight shot of 100 proof whiskey and wish me well.
