FRANCES H. SMITH SOUTH BURLINGTON / SOUTH HERO - Frances H. Smith, 78, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston. Fran was born on Feb. 1, 1930, in Hardwick, the daughter of Philip and Myrtielyn ( Ainsworth ) Clark. She married George H. Smith on June 21, 1947, in Hardwick. They moved to Essex Junction in 1954, and to South Hero in 1968. She was employed by J.C. Penny's, Sears, Drs. Burnett and Cryan, and later became a realtor in South Hero and the Champlain Islands. This was a job she loved, as it provided her with the opportunity to meet and socialize with many newcomers as well as long term residents of the islands. Fran also greatly enjoyed her trips to Florida with her grandchildren and the years of swimming and boating on the lake. She is survived by her son Mike Smith and his partner Sue Erbe of New Boston, N.H.; and her daughter Linda McGettrick and her husband Mike of Essex Junction; her daughter-in-law Bonnie Smith of Grand Isle; four grandchildren, Jason Smith and his wife Marcy of Essex Junction, Heather Hayes and her husband Doug of Middlesex, Mark McGettrick and wife Jessica of Salem, Mass., Amy Savoy and her husband Jason of South Hero; seven greatgrandchildren, Olivia Frances, Landon, Isabella, Ireland, Cole, Aiden and Ava; her brother Bruce Clark and his wife Mimi of Essex Junction; brother-in- law Frank Smith and his wife Kathy of Yorba Linda, Calif.; sister-in-law Sally Smith of Milton; her aunt Audrey Reed and husband Dave of Craftsbury; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves her special "daughters" Robyn Ledoux and Donna Laffan; and her beloved cat "Smokey." Fran was predeceased by her husband George; brother Bradley Clark; and brotherin-law Burton Smith. Fran's family wishes to thank the staff of the Vermont Respite House for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the South Hero Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 365, South Hero, VT 05486, or to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m., in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday morning from 11 a.m., until the hour of the service.
