Frances Hillman Mitchell, 92, a longtime resident of Oxford, Miss., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010. Born to Inez and George W. Hillman in Bessemer, Ala., in 1918, she graduated from Sheffield High School in Sheffield, Ala., in 1934. She was married for 66 years to the late Henry R. Mitchell Jr., former university architect.Upon moving to Oxford in 1963, they immersed themselves in both the Ole Miss and Oxford communities. Mrs. Mitchell was especially active in the ministry of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where she served for many years in various positions including president of ECW, Sunday school teacher and EYC sponsor.She was a long standing member and officer of Oxford Women's Book Club and a published poet. Mrs. Mitchell also was an accomplished seamstress, gardener and sailor. Her charming smile and sparkling eyes were welcoming to all. She had a true servant's heart which sprang from a life devoted to Christ.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother and two sisters. She is survived by her children, Henry R. Mitchell III and his wife, Debbie, of Ocean Springs, Miss., Jane Mitchell Mazurkiewicz and her husband, Bob, of Canton, Ga., and Paul D. Mitchell and his wife, Joyce, of Oxford, Miss.; and by her sisters, Marie Smith and Betty Chambers, of Florence, Ala., and Madeline Foust, of Charlotte, N.C.; and by her seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oxford, Miss., with the Rev. Taylor Moore and the Rev. Penny Sisson officiating.
