Family-Placed ObituaryELIZABETH JENKS McCARTHY "Libby" Libby, greatly beloved daughter of the late Jack Jenks and Polly Jenks Saltzgaber of St. Simons Island, GA and devoted mother of sons, Neil and Owen, departed this life on Saturday, November 7, 2009 following a brief, gallant struggle with a rare form of cancer. She spent her final days surrounded by her mother and by her brothers and sisters, Louis, Peter and Amy Jenks and Laura Jenks Durand. Also at her bedside were step-father, Dr. Jan Saltzgaber and brother-in-law, Peter Durand, as well as many, many friends. Born in Royal Oak, MI, Libby was reared on St. Simons Island, GA, where she attended school and graduated from Glynn Academy High School in 1981. She moved to Palm Beach County in 1982 and spent her young adult life traveling and lived an adventurous life as a dive master, sports fisherman and as the then-youngest woman to receive a captainÌs license and serve aboard an ocean-going dive boat. In 1991, she earned a baccalaureate degree in accounting from Florida Atlantic University. As a Certified Public Accountant, she was initially employed and then became a partner in The Brunton-McCarthy CPA Firm in Boca Raton. She had completed a number of graduate courses at Florida Atlantic University focusing on international taxation and was a member of several professional organizations. Though dedicated to her profession, her boys, Neil and Owen, were the essential part of her life. Libby cherished her sons and nurtured them with her constant love and support. During her childhood and youth on St. Simons Island, Libby was a member of St. Simons United Methodist Church. Her death, as her life, was marked by courage, strength, patience and humor. She slipped from life with characteristic grace, embraced by the love of her large family and wide circle of friends. A memorial celebration of LibbyÌs life will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Jupiter Beach Park, beginning at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Elizabeth Jenks McCarthy to the Hospice Wing of JFK Hospital, 5301 South Congress Avenue, Atlantis, FL 33462. Libby will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. To express condolences and/or make donations Visit PalmBeachPost.com/obituaries
