Evelyn Jeanetta (Armstrong) Marks 1910-2006 Evelyn Marks (Aunty Sis), 96, widow of George Marks, of Moncton formerly of Havelock and Alma, NB passed away peacefully on August 22, 2006 at the Moncton Hospital. Evelyn was born in Elm Valley, Kings County, NB, the daughter of the late Herbert and Bessie (Manning) Armstrong. Evelyn, who's favorite room was in the kitchen where she was the "BOSS" and in everyone elses kitchen at family gatherings too, spent most of her adult life in the food service industry, working for prestigious companies in parts of the United States, Montreal and Toronto. Years later Evelyn and her husband George opened and operated several successful businesses (G&E Store, Seagull Restaurant, Seabreeze Take Out, Fundy Clubhouse Dinning Room, Fundy View Motel) in the Alma, Fundy National Park area. While operating the Fundy Clubhouse Dinning Room it was reconized as one of the best restaurants by "Where to Eat in Canada". Evelyn ruled her business with an "iron hand" but underneath she was a loving and caring person who always helped others in need, whether giving someone in the county a needed job or donating her time and skills to many community charities. She often talked fondly of many dedicated employees and the fun and adventures they had over the years together. Evelyn always put her family first and foremost and played the lottery weekly, hoping for the big jackpot to share with them all. Her generosity and smile will be missed by her family and friends and we will especially miss her doughnuts and homemade preserves, but she leaves us with a legacy of favorite recipes. Evelyn was a member of the St. Stephen's United Church in Alma. She was a member of the UCW while living in Alma, she was the first chairperson of the Alma Jubilee, which started in 1976. She organized the Senior Citizen's of Alma called the Village Squares. She was a past Matron of the Gloria Chapter, Order of Eastern Star of Havelock and a life member of the Ladies Auxilary # 86 of Havelock, NB. Evelyn and George enjoyed travelling and spent many winters in Florida and California visiting family and friends in their retirement years. Evelyn left Alma in 1985 after her husband's death and moved to Moncton where she remained until her death. Her last place of residence was at Camden Park. She was an active member in the seniors groups at various seniors complexes in which she resided. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Pat McKinley of Santa Maria, Ca.; step-son, Gordon Marks (Norma) of Oshawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Rene McKinley, Richard McKinley, Rose Barba, Rona McKinley; step grandchildren, Melanie Marks, Jeff Marks and Jason Marks; several great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Frances Armstrong (Mansel-deceased) of Alma; brother-in-law, Max Cross (Treva-deceased) of Hillsborough; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, Raymond McKinley; brothers, Enzlie, Delbert, Mansel; sisters, Flossie, Pauline, Treva, Juanita and infant Mavis. She will be resting at the St. Stephen's United Church in Alma, where the visitation and funeral service will be held. Interment will be held in the Anglican Church Cemetery, Sussex Corner, NB. In lieu of flowers donations to the St. Stephen's United Church or to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. Details on the dates and times for the visitation and funeral service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of the Albert County Funeral Home, 4130 Route 114, Hopewell Cape, (506) 734-2780 www.albertcountyfh.com [The Times & Transcript]
